Finding a roommate is one of the most personal decisions we make, yet it’s usually handled through group chats, word of mouth, or a cousin’s cousin’s friend who just needs a place to crash. The founder of Otter knew this struggle firsthand. After countless roommate journeys, one truth became clear: living with someone is never just about sharing rent. It’s about quirks, habits, boundaries, late-night talks, and who you’re willing to share that last slice of pizza with. You’re not just sharing a space. You’re sharing worlds. And that kind of connection deserves more than luck and recommendations.
The Shift
We reframed roommate matching as something closer to dating than logistics. If there are apps to find your person, why shouldn’t there be one to find your person to live with? Otter was built around compatibility, personality, and quirks. We leaned into the idea that everyone has them, and the magic happens when you find someone whose quirks match yours. Visually, we created a lively universe of Otter People illustrations. Geometric, colorful, and animated characters that represent different personalities and habits. These lovable figures live everywhere across the brand, from backgrounds and frames to stickers and content moments, turning information into something fun and human.
