What We Learned Designing Boundary Road in Ghana

Building a Brand From Thousands of Miles Away: What We Learned Designing Boundary Road in Ghana.

When choosing an international branding agency, companies often face a familiar choice: a local agency that knows the market, or an established agency abroad with a strong process and international experience.

There's another option worth considering: a Mexican or Latin American design agency working as a nearshore partner, combining strategic thinking, storytelling, and experience navigating different cultural contexts with a competitive value proposition compared with many agencies in the US or Europe.

We put that approach to the test with Boundary Road, a food market brand in Accra, Ghana, built entirely by our team in Mexico, without anyone ever setting foot there.

Distance was never the real obstacle:
What limits an agency in an unfamiliar market isn't geography, but shortcuts.

For Boundary Road, we went beyond the obvious to understand Ghana's culture, history, visual landscape, and everyday context. We wanted to know not only what the country looked like, but what made it feel like Ghana.

That became the foundation for everything that followed.

Four steps, one market we'd never worked in before our process for Boundary Road followed four stages:

1. Research With Wonder
We explored history, culture, weather, fauna, nightlife, and everyday life to build a genuine understanding of the people and context behind the market.

2. Seek Local Inspiration
We studied the local graphic landscape to understand where the brand would live and where it could find its own space.

3. Create With Admiration
We designed to honor the culture rather than rely on stereotypes or surface-level references.

4. Prepare To Pitch
We presented not only the design, but the thinking behind it, supported by research, references, and stories.

What working with a nearshore partner actually looks like:

For us, it starts with curiosity and continues with clear communication. As a LATAM design agency, we bring strategic thinking, storytelling, and experienced creative talent to international markets.

Different market. Same commitment to great work.
Boundary Road is one example of that approach. Our experience working across the USA, Ghana, UAE, Romania, the United Kingdom, and Germany shows that the process can travel, even when the market, culture, and context change.

In the end, an agency's location says very little about whether it can create a meaningful brand for your market.

Its process says everything.
